Les Mis Part 1 Summary

 What I've Learned

Nothing lol, (JKJK). So the book begins with a brief description of M. Myriel. He was born into an aristocratic family in 1740 but had to flee to Italy due to the French Revolution that happened in 1789. Years passed and he returned to his homeland as a simple priest. He then encounters Emperor Napoleon in 1806 and leads Myriel's appointment as bishop of Digne. After being appointed and moves to Digne, he realizes that the church provided him and his family a well eighteenth-century palace, which ia what most bishops are given.

The journey then begins with Myriel noticing the hospital next to his palace. He sees how it's cramped and in very horrible conditions. With the good heart he has, he decides to exchange his palace to the doctors for their small hospital. Myriel then gives the majority of his church money to the city's poorest citizens, charities in Paris, etc. Even when people criticize, he still continues to be humble and gentle.

M. Myriel defended those who were poor and argued that the reason why criminls steal is to survive the hunger they don't want to suffer. He's also urged the rich to at least give a bit for the need (of course some lying is need to be poked to make this happen). During all of his efforts, he's earned the nickname "Bienvenu" which means "welcome", not a bad nickname if I do say so myself. In one word to describe this fictional man, humble.

  1. I agree with your summary and I agree that the bishop is a humble man.
