Les Mis Today

 Connections

One connection with the book and the modern world is the rich people. In one of the early chapters (yes I forgot which one), M. Myriel talked to an aristocrat who never and refused to give to the poor. M. Myriel found this disappointing and decided to trick him in saying that God would let him into paradise if he helped those in need. Of course he fell for it, but the guy only gave 1 coin. ONE. This part of the story connects still with our rich people. Not just here in America, almost everywhere there will always be a rich person who would never help those in need and just swim in their money. Unless told that if they do it, they'll be rewarded. Sad if you ask me. They expect to be rewarded just for doing something someone needs more than them. A second connection is the citizens of course. When M. Myriel arrived to a city with a donkey instead of a fancy carriage, everyone was confused and laughed. Well still happens today. When we see something strange, our first thought is 'what?' and give a funny look to the scene. Like today for me, I was walking down main street and I see a pink police car. Pink. Now ain't that curious and...weird? It's as if it were to go to Barbie's house or sum. Last connection is the setting. In the first chapter we were told that M. Myriel lived in a humungous house that can fill hundreds of people while a hospital was built to only have a family of 4. The staff and Myriel switched because of his humbleness but we've seen how important facilities (such as Hospitals, school, etc) are more smaller than another building that should initiate to be the same size as it. Not only the size, but conditions can be poor as well. We may not have it here in our country but like in Africa, they're the ones who need more of our buildings.
